The team formed in 1978 out of a merger between two amateur sides, Al-Mada'in and a club then known as Wadi Al-Qura, and was registered under its present name in 1981. The badge carries an Arabian leopard, which gave the club its nickname, the Arab Tigers, and pointed to the wildlife of the region rather than to anything the team had achieved on the pitch.

That changed in June 2023, when the Royal Commission for AlUla took over the club as part of Vision 2030. The results followed fast: the Saudi Third Division title in 2023–24, sealed with an 8–7 penalty shoot-out win over Al-Anwar, and promotion again in March 2025 after finishing second in the Second Division. A women's team, built in the same wave of investment, won its own First Division title in 2023.
