In 2009, in Blida, Algeria's women lifted the African Women's Volleyball Championship — sandwiched between two runner-up finishes on the same stage in Nairobi, in 2007 and again in 2011.

The national team took shape in 1975 and stepped onto an international court that same year, finishing fifth at the Mediterranean Games in Algiers. Three years later, it won gold at the African Games, held that time in Algiers too, then repeated the title in 2007 and once more in 2011, in Maputo. A Pan Arab Games silver followed in 1997 and again in 2011.

Squads now gather and train at the Centre National de Regroupement et Préparation des Talents de l'Élite Sportive in Souidania, outside Algiers. Fatma-Zohra Oukazi, the setter who captained the side, went to two Olympic Games, in 2008 and in 2012.

The team wears green, white and red, the colours of the Algerian flag. It finished tenth at the 2022 Mediterranean Games, and fifth at the 2023 African Championship.
