Nihel Kebaier runs the offense from setter, one of the names attached to a squad built in 2022 for the Mediterranean Games, where the Eagles of Carthage finished seventh — their best showing in that competition, up from eighth in 2001. It is a modest line next to what the team has done closer to home.

The federation behind the side, the Fédération Tunisienne de Volley-Ball, took shape in 1956, and the women's national team followed a few years later, in 1960. Its first real test came in Cairo in 1976, at the African Championship, where Tunisia reached the final and lost it — a runners-up finish that set the tone for what followed. The gold arrived later, three times over: 1985, 1987 and 1999. Bronze came in three further editions, in 1995, 2007 and 2013, and a second silver in 2009, which meant that for the best part of four decades the Eagles of Carthage were rarely far from the podium in African volleyball.

They play in red and white, the colours of the flag, and when matches are staged in Tunis it is usually at the Palais des Sports d'El Menzah, a hall holding around 5,500 people.

The rivalry that matters most is continental rather than local, and it is against them that the record of three titles carries its weight.
