Whenever Cameroon's women reach the knockout stages of the CAVB African Nations Championship, the fixture list tends to point the same way: Kenya. The two have met repeatedly for continental titles, and it is against the Kenyans that the Indomitable Lionesses have had to prove three African crowns, taken in 2017, 2019 and 2021, mean more than the two runner-up finishes either side of them, in 2015 and 2023.

The team plays under the federation founded in 1964, in the green, red and yellow of the national flag, and its continental record rests on more than the championship itself: four silver medals at the All-Africa Games, in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019, show a side that has rarely finished a major tournament outside the podium at home on the continent. Further afield the picture changes. Five appearances at the FIVB Women's World Championship, in 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2025, have brought a best finish of 21st, and the 2022 Challenger Cup ended in an eighth-place finish after a forfeited quarter-final against Puerto Rico over visa problems that kept the squad from taking the court.

At home, African Championship matches have been staged at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex, which holds 5,263.

Jean-René Akono took charge around 2018, through the run that delivered two of the three championship titles, before Paulo De Tarso Milagres took over in 2025. But the name most attached to that era belongs on court rather than the bench: Christelle Nana Tchoudjang, the captain who led the side through the 2016 Olympic cycle and remains the player Cameroonian volleyball measures itself against.
