In 1984, Alianza Atlético reached the final of the Copa Perú and lost it to Los Espartanos. Nineteen years later it came closer still, finishing runner-up in the 2003 Torneo Clausura.
The team was formed in Sullana, in the Piura region, on 18 January 1920 as Club Sport Alianza. Within two months, on 12 March, it merged with a second local side, Atlético Sullana, and took the combined name it still carries. It stayed in the top flight without interruption from 1988 to 2011, twenty-three seasons, before dropping to the Segunda División for the first time in its history. Promotion back came in 2015, awarded by a FIFA ruling rather than won on the pitch, though it put the club back among Peru's elite.
Sullana knows the team as Los Churres, and its colours, white and blue, have remained constant. Home games are played at the Estadio Campeones del 36, which holds 12,000.
