The club took shape in Peristeri, a western suburb of Athens, and was formally founded on 31 May 1923. Its blue star on a white crest was carried over from Astir Peristeriou after the two sides merged in 1932, and the name Atrómitos — the Fearless — has stuck alongside the nickname Kyanólefki, the Cyan-Whites.

Few players are tied to the club's history like Luiz Brito, the Brazilian defender who made 287 appearances between 2008 and 2017 and still holds the record. Kostas Mitroglou passed through more briefly: 19 goals in 32 appearances in 2011–12 were enough to earn him a move to Benfica.

Local rivalries run in two directions from Peristeri: with Panionios, a fixture that has produced serious trouble among supporters, and with Egaleo, whose derby carries its own name, the West Athens derby, reflecting how close together the two clubs sit in the capital's western districts.
