«Los Leones»
Pupils at Colegio Nacional N.º 1 in Río Cuarto wanted a football team of their own, and in September 1912 they got one, with Juan Francisco Remedi as its first president. Only in 1918 did it break away and take the name it still carries, Asociación Atlética Estudiantes .
What followed made the club's reputation. Estudiantes won the Liga Cordobesa seven seasons in a row from 1919 to 1925, and kept coming back to it for decades afterwards — 37 titles in all. The club reached the Argentine Primera División in 1983, where they played the 1983, 1984 and 1985 seasons.
The long climb back took the rest of the century and more. Winning Torneo Federal B in 2017 lifted the club out of the third tier and into the Primera Nacional. Cup football has produced no trophy, though in 2023 Estudiantes knocked out Atlético Tucumán, a top-flight side.
Home is the Estadio Ciudad de Río Cuarto Antonio Candini, which holds 12,000. The sky blue and white on the shirts gave the team one of its nicknames, El Celeste , but the one that stuck is Los Leones — the Lions — and that came from the city rather than the club.
