«El Taladro»
In the amateur years before Argentina's league had turned professional, a club from a station stop south of Buenos Aires won the second division twice running, in 1899 and 1900, before most of the country's football had settled on fixed rules. Banfield's early decades read like a climb through every rung of the ladder: the fourth division in 1912, the third in 1908, promotion after promotion until the club had nowhere left to go but the top flight. It took until 2009 for that climb to reach its point, when Banfield won the Torneo Apertura.
The club was founded on 21 January 1896 as Banfield Athletic Club, a name that gave way to Banfield Football Club in 1904 and then to Club Atlético Banfield in 1909. Between those title-winning years at the top, the club built a habit of going up and down: ten separate second-division championships, in 1939, 1946, 1962, 1973, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995, 2001 and 2010.
Home matches are played at the Estadio Florencio Sola, known locally as El Taladro's ground, which holds 34,900 in the white and green of the club. The nickname itself, El Taladro, the Drill, has stuck through all the name changes and division swaps. Across the south of the city, the fixture against Lanús carries its own name, the Clásico del Sur.
