Nueva Pompeya sits in the south of Buenos Aires. Deportivo Riestra grew out of a neighbourhood welfare body, the Asociación de Fomento Barrio Colón, and took its name from the avenue where local boys used to gather. The club joined the Argentine Football Association in 1946 and spent most of its existence in the amateur depths of the pyramid, playing out of the Estadio Guillermo Laza in nearby Villa Soldati, a ground listed for 8,740 but rarely holding more than a few thousand on a matchday.

The black and white shirts gave the club its nickname, Blanquinegros, and for a long stretch that was about all there was to say. Riestra took the Primera D title in 1953 and again in 1986, then twice more won its way up through promotion play-offs, in 1994 and 2009, without ever breaking through to professional football.

That changed between 2012 and 2014, when new backing arrived alongside advice from Diego Maradona and the club finally won Primera D outright, stepping into professional football in Primera C. The rise continued in 2017, when Riestra beat Comunicaciones in the play-off final and reached the Primera División for the first time in its history.

Jonathan Herrera, the club's all-time leading scorer, left on loan to San Lorenzo in 2020 and later to Independiente. Across the south of the capital, the derby that matters most is against Sacachispas, a club from the Bajo Flores district next door; their meetings, born in the lower divisions, are still called simply the Clásico, and Sacachispas supporters describe Riestra as their eternal rival.
