One loan spell shows what the club does best. In the 2012/13 season a defender named Solomon Kverkvelia arrived from Rubin Kazan and made eighteen appearances for Neftekhimik. He went on to win a Russian championship with Lokomotiv, play at Euro 2024, and captain Georgia's national team.

The club's own history reaches back to 1965, when a works team formed at the Nizhnekamsk chemical combine and competed in Tatarstan's republican leagues. It was registered as a professional club only on 1 January 1991, with R.T. Shiyapov as its first president.

Andrei Sitchikhin holds the club appearance record, with 426 games, and later returned twice as head coach, in 2011–12 and 2015–16.

Since 2007 Neftekhimik has taken in loan players from Rubin Kazan, among them Kverkvelia and Ruslan Kambolov, who later played for Krasnodar, Arsenal and Russia. That link now feeds the club's sharpest rivalry: meetings with Rubin have been billed as El Tatariko since 2022. The older fixture is the derby with KAMAZ, forty kilometres away in Naberezhnye Chelny.
