The ground at kilometre 16 on the road out of Vientiane went up in 2009. The New Laos National Stadium holds 20,000.
The federation dates to 1951 and joined FIFA the following year, though it waited until 1980 to come under the Asian Confederation. Twice, in 2006 and 2014, the side made a second qualifying round.
The nearest thing to a run came in 2014 at the AFC Challenge Cup, where Laos reached the semi-finals and went out to Nepal on penalties. Fifteen appearances at the AFF Championship since 1996 have each ended at the group stage.
The captain, Damoth Thongkhamsavath , plays in Vietnam for Dong A Thanh Hoa; Thailand takes several others, among them Phoutthavong Sangvilay at BG Pathum United.
