Lens

Lens sits in the coal country of northern France, and for much of the twentieth century the mines and the club grew from the same ground: Racing Club de Lens turned professional in 1934 with backing from the Compagnie des mines de Lens, the local coal company that employed much of the town. The club had started in 1906 under a different name and took the one it carries today only in 1969, long after the pits had already shaped what it meant to support it.

That link to the town shows up most at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis , which Lens bought outright from the city in 2025.

The league title arrived once, in 1997/98, and the man most associated with that side never left the pitch for anyone else's colours: Éric Sikora played for Lens from 1985 to 2004, close to 590 appearances, and wore the captain's armband when the championship was won. Others put up bigger scoring numbers over shorter spells, but Sikora's two decades at the club are what people in Lens measure loyalty against.

What tends to sharpen the mood at Bollaert-Delelis more than any of that, though, is Lille.
