Three minutes into the 2003 Copa del Rey final at the Bernabéu, Mallorca were already up against a Recreativo de Huelva side with nothing to lose, and by full time it was 3-0, Samuel Eto'o scoring twice and Walter Pandiani adding a third. A year earlier the same group had gone the other way in the UEFA Cup final, beaten 2-1 by Lazio, and in 1998 they had already put one over Barcelona, winning the Supercopa de España 3-1 on aggregate.

Miquel Àngel Nadal captained the side through 348 appearances, and further back, Dani Güiza top-scored in the whole of La Liga with 27 goals in 2007-08. The academy has had its own returns: Albert Riera went on to win a World Cup and a European Championship.

Founded on 5 March 1916 as Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club, the side took its "Real" title from the king himself that June, lost it under the Second Republic in 1931 as Club Deportivo Mallorca, and had it restored around 1950 as Real Club Deportivo Mallorca. The club has swung hard between levels since: relegated to the third and fourth tiers for six seasons from 1975, dropped into Segunda B again in 2017 under financial strain, then bought by Robert Sarver and Steve Nash the following year. Sarver sold his stake to Andy Kohlberg in 2023, the year before Mallorca lost another Copa final, this time to Athletic Bilbao. They came back down to Segunda in 2026. Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, opened for the 1999 Universiade, had its running track removed in a 2023-24 rebuild that pushed capacity to 25,736.
