On 2 May 2006 the Cossacks stood ninety minutes from a trophy. The Ukrainian Cup final at the Olimpiyskiy in Kyiv was level until the first minute after the break, when Kleber scored for Dynamo Kyiv. The date carried an echo the players had no reason to notice: the club had been founded on that same day in 1935, as the works team of the Zaporizhstal steel plant. The 0-1 defeat was as close as it ever got to a Ukrainian honour, though it did earn a place in the UEFA Cup.

Before that there had been a longer run of success under a different flag. As Stal, and from late 1949 as Metalurh, the club won the Ukrainian SSR championship three times and took the republic cup in 1951 and 1952.

The best league season of the independent era came in 2001/02, when Oleh Taran's team finished fourth and reached Europe on merit rather than through a cup run. A decade later the club was in the second tier, and the runners-up place in 2011/12 sent it back up.

Then it stopped. The original club was liquidated in 2016, and a new municipal side took the name. The Slavutych-Arena, with room for 11,983, remains home, and the derbies with Torpedo Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro from Dnipropetrovsk belong to the older story more than the present one. Dmytro Chyhrynskyi came through here before the collapse; the current side is a municipal project rebuilding from a much lower base, playing for a return to a level the name once held without argument.
