Promotion has never come easy for Matfyz. The club won the 1. Národní Liga, the second tier at the time, in 1971/72 and again in 1973/74, each finish earning a place in the Extraliga. That second climb kept them in the top flight for three seasons: ninth in 1972/73, then last of eight in 1974/75, a finish that sent them back down.

A second cycle followed decades later. Matfyz took the 1. Liga title in 1989/90 and once more in 2000/01, returning to the Extraliga the following year. That spell lasted two seasons, both ending at the bottom of the table, and a lost relegation playoff in 2002/03 closed it for good. In between came a third-place finish in the 1. Liga in 1996/97 and fourth in 2006/07, the closest the club has come to forcing a third promotion.

Jan Kašpar chaired the club through 54 seasons, long enough to span both promotions and both relegations, and Ladislav Bičík wore the shirt for 17 years before spending another 18 on the bench, the two names most tied to the years between the highs. Zdeněk Malý, a world champion with Czechoslovakia in 1956, coached at the club for close to three decades.

These days Matfyz sit back in the 1. Liga, eighth last season after finishing 13th the one before, with no fixed rival beyond the occasional meeting with fellow Prague university sides such as ČVUT. The club grew out of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University, the link its nickname still carries.
