Second-tier volleyball in the Czech Republic is where this side lives. As the reserve team of VK Jihostroj České Budějovice, the roster is built each season around whoever the first team does not yet need, which makes the 1. liga table a less useful guide to the club than the movement of names off it and into the senior squad in Stromovka.
The team has actually won that second tier three times, in 2008/2009, 2010/2011 and 2012/2013, and each time turned down or lost the route upward: promotion was declined outright the first time, then given away in the play-offs to Brno and later to Ústí nad Labem. Two further runner-up finishes, in 2011/2012 and 2014/2015, fit the same pattern.
Its own history only goes back so far. The side traces to VK EGE České Budějovice, founded in 1997 by Jan Diviš on the rights of the dissolved Meteor České Budějovice, and it ran as an independent club until the 2015/2016 season, when it was folded into VK České Budějovice as the B-team. Sportovní hala Stromovka, seating 2,500, has been the shared home for both since.
Because promotion has never been taken up, there is no real rivalry built around the B-team itself. What tension there is belongs to the parent club: České Budějovice's meetings with Příbram, Kladno and Brno carry the weight in the Extraliga, and it is against players who came up through this reserve side that those matches are increasingly played.
