The Cascadia Clash pits Portland against Seattle — OL Reign, the Reign before that.

The club was assembled in 2012 for a league that did not yet exist, and it took the field in 2013 when the NWSL played its first season. Portland won that season. A team with no history at all lifted the first trophy the competition ever awarded, which set an expectation the Thorns have mostly met since: championships again in 2017 and 2022, and a defeat in the 2018 final in between.

The name came from the city's own nickname, Rose City, and the badge followed. Black, red and pink is not a combination many clubs would risk, and it has become the most recognisable kit in the league.

2021 was the odd year. Portland finished top of the table for the Shield, won the Challenge Cup, and took the Women's International Champions Cup — three pieces of silverware, none of them the championship, which slipped away at the end.

Providence Park has been the constant. It sits inside the city rather than beside a motorway, hemmed in by streets on all four sides, and crowds have regularly filled it for league fixtures at numbers that other clubs draw only for finals.

The task now is a fourth championship, and the derby dates are the ones that fill first.
