It was a contest that swung on two decisive moments rather than sustained dominance.
And here's the thing about the 60th minute — J. Shaw found space in the box and finished clinically to give Gotham the lead. Portland responded quickly, bringing on D. Castellanos for R. Lyles and pushing for an equaliser. By then Gotham had already made changes of their own, introducing J. Dudley and M. Freeman while S. McCaskill headed to the bench. The visitors were not done yet. S. Wilson converted from the spot in the 75th minute to level matters.
To be fair, the statistics tell a story of mismatched fortunes. Gotham enjoyed 74 per cent possession, launched 61 attacks and registered five shots on target alongside four off target, yet managed only one big chance created. Portland, with 26 per cent possession, found their way to goal through a penalty after generating six shots on target and seven wide. They created their own single big chance, but the conversion rate did not match the volume of attempts.
There were cautions scattered through the second half. N. Nijstad picked up a yellow card in the 43rd minute, while M. Vignola and M. Purce both showed the referee near the end of the game. The goalkeepers were called into action — Gotham's keeper made five saves against Portland's four — and the home side cleared 16 balls compared to 21 from the visitors.
What this means in the table is that Gotham maintain their lead, extending their unbeaten run to five matches. They had won three of those, drawn two, and notably beat Portland 1:0 in their last meeting. Portland's form has been harder to read — four wins, two draws and four defeats across ten games, including that heavy 1:5 loss to Utah Royals. This point keeps them within touching distance but does not close the gap.
