Morocco is the fixture that sets the tone. The two sides met in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Women, and Senegal walked off in protest; the title was taken from them afterwards. Nigeria supplies the older, plainer kind of difficulty — the opponent you have to get past to reach anything.

The team came together in 2002 and spent its first years without much of a stage. They won the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone A Women's Cup in 2020, then again in 2023.

Mame Moussa Cissé took charge in 2019 and stayed until 2026. The 2023 African Games went one round further, to the semi-finals, and stopped there too.

Home is usually Stade Demba Diop in Dakar, though the team has no fixed ground and has also played at the much larger stadium in Diamniadio. Nguenar Ndiaye has scored more goals for Senegal than anyone; the squad now draws on players at Olympique de Marseille, Galatasaray and Strasbourg, alongside those still at Aigles de la Médina in Dakar.

What is missing is a result outside West Africa. The regional trophies show the team can win when the field is narrow; the wider one has not opened yet.
