Volodymyr Sysenko had played for Vorskla before he and the sports journalist Stanislav Maizus put together a side of their own in 2011.
It came back in 2019, when Serhii Ivashchenko — a construction-firm head and a deputy on the Poltava city council — took it on as owner and president. Maizus stayed, as executive director. What followed happened fast.
The season in the top flight ended with the club bottom of the table and back where it had come from.
Home is the Vorskla Stadium named after Oleksii Butovskyi, which holds 24,586. The name belongs to the other club in the city, and so does the argument: Vorskla are the rivals, the Poltava derby is the fixture, and the use of the ground itself is part of what the two are contesting. The crimson and gold play there.
