The first stay lasted seven seasons before relegation in 2022; the best of those was 11th place in 2017–18.

The run before this promotion was longer and stranger than any table shows. In 2021–22, on their way down, the Auriverdes reached the final of the Taça de Portugal and lost 3–1 to Porto. The defeat still carried them into the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira the following season, where Porto beat them again, 3–0.

The one result supporters keep returning to came earlier: a 1–0 win at the Estádio do Dragão in 2015–16, in the club's first season among the elite.

None of that was in prospect for most of the club's life. Tondela spent decades in the district game around Viseu, winning the regional championship in 1941–42 and again the following year, then the district cup in 2003–04 and 2004–05. The climb out began with the Terceira Divisão title in 2008–09 and continued with the Segunda Divisão in 2011–12, which returned the club to professional football.

The club itself dates from 6 June 1933, when two local sides — a football club formed in 1925 and Operário Atlético Clube, formed a year before the merger — became one.

Home is the Estádio João Cardoso, which held far fewer people until promotion in 2015 forced the issue: two new stands went up, taking the capacity to 5,000. The yellow shirts with green stripes match the colours of the town.
