Twente Women

Enschede sits in the east of the Netherlands, close to the German border. The football club took the nickname, and in January 2007 it took on something else — a women's side, set up as the first professional operation of its kind in the country, with training planned six days a week rather than the evenings-and-weekends model that had carried the women's game until then.

That timing was not accidental. The Vrouwen Eredivisie was starting from nothing, and Twente were one of six clubs on the original list.

What followed made the club the most decorated in Dutch women's football. In between sat an interruption worth noting: for two seasons the Dutch and Belgian leagues merged into the BeNe League, and Twente won both editions, in 2012–13 and 2013–14.

Home is Sportpark Schreurserve , which holds 2 000. When the calendar brings something bigger — certain UEFA Women's Champions League nights among them — the team moves across the city to De Grolsch Veste and its 30 200 seats.
