Yangon United

The Lion Warriors, as Yangon United are known, play out of the Yangon United Sports Complex, a 3,500-seat ground that fits a club built to represent the capital rather than a neighbourhood.

The team did not start under that name. Tay Za, chairman of the Htoo Group and owner of the Air Bagan airline, took over Viva Football Club in July 2007 and renamed it Air Bagan. When the Myanmar Football Federation launched the Myanmar National League as the country's first fully professional competition in 2009, the club was rebranded Yangon United to carry the city's name into the new era.

It has since become the most decorated side the league has produced, with five championships, taken in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018. For years the club's derby ran against Yadanarbon, a fixture billed as the Super Myanmar derby; as Yadanarbon's fortunes faded, Shan United took their place as the rival that now defines matchday in the league table.

None of it would have a name to attach to if Tay Za had not walked into Viva Football Club's affairs in 2007 and won the championship with Air Bagan in his very first season in charge.
