Bakırköy's seafront district gave the club its name and, for decades, its low profile: a multi-sport society founded in 1956, better known locally for its facilities than for silverware. The women's volleyball section changed that balance in a single season.

Yeşilyurt Women spent most of their history shuttling between Turkey's second tier and the margins of the Sultanlar Ligi, the top flight. Promotion in 2018-19, sealed with a runner-up finish in the First League's final stage, put them back among the country's leading clubs. A domestic cup final appearance in 2001-02, lost, had been the previous high point.

Then, in 2020-21, the club won the CEV Women's Challenge Cup without dropping a tie in the competition, beating the Romanian side CSM Volei Alba Blaj in the final. It was Yeşilyurt's first European trophy and the first time any Turkish women's club had won that particular cup. Aleksia Karutasu, the Romanian-born attacker who anchored the run, was named MVP of the final.

The squad behind that title read like a small United Nations — Canadian, Slovenian, Dutch, Serbian and Cuban players alongside the Turkish core — a mix the club had leaned on for years to compete with wealthier Istanbul rivals. Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, VakıfBank and Beşiktaş remain the clubs Yeşilyurt measures itself against, without ever quite matching their budgets or their trophy cabinets.

Matches are still played at the Yeşilyurt Spor Salonu, a hall seating 700 that leaves little room for the crowds a European night can draw. Since the Challenge Cup, the league title and a first Turkish Cup have stayed out of reach.
