Brežice

Promotion to the 3. SNL in 2016 remains the peak: Brežice won the division outright, a title earned after a spell in which the club had rebuilt itself almost from nothing. The current NK Brežice 1919 only came into being in 2013, formed after the previous club went bankrupt in 2011–12. The new side took on the old one's youth teams and, for the sake of continuity, kept the year 1919 in its name.

That earlier club had traded names for decades depending on who ran it or paid for it — NK Svoboda Brežice under Yugoslav socialism, then NK Krka Brežice through sponsorship in the 1990s and early 2000s. A 2002 merger with NK Krško produced NK Krško Posavje, which lasted one season before the two went their separate ways again. Through all of it, the club stayed anchored to the town square: its nickname, Trgouci, meaning "traders," comes from trg, the Slovene word for market square, where Brežice is based.

Below the 2016 title sit two 4. SNL championships either side of it, in 2001–02 and 2014–15, plus a run of lower-division wins and a pair of MNZ Celje cup victories. Dejan Kelhar and Gregor Sikošek both went from Brežice's ranks into the Slovenia national side, though neither stayed long enough to turn the club into more than a starting point on their way out. The blue shirt gained an orange trim in 2013, marking the new club apart from what came before it.

Brežice have not stood still lately either: a runners-up finish in the 3. SNL East in 2024–25 sent them up to the 2. SNL, back into a tier the club last regularly troubled before the 2011 collapse.
