In October 2024, Central Norte went to penalties against Sarmiento de La Banda after ninety scoreless minutes in the final of the Torneo Federal A. The shootout finished 4-3. That win sent a club from Salta back to the Primera Nacional after thirty-seven years away from national football's second tier, and it capped a run that had already produced the Torneo Federal B title in 2019, when Central Norte beat Guaraní Antonio Franco 1-0.

The club traces back to 9 March 1921, when a group of sportsmen met in Pedro Pastore's house on Balcarce street and named the new side after the Ferrocarril Central Norte, the state railway whose line ran through the province. That origin still shows in one of the club's nicknames, Ferroviarios. Black and white have been the colours from the start.

Salta's provincial history holds two results people still bring up: a 6-5 defeat to Juventud Antoniana in 1955, and a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors during the 1982 Torneo Nacional.

The Estadio Doctor Luis Güemes sits on land the provincial governor handed the club in 1955; its cement terraces went up in 1959, when capacity reached 10,000, and by the 1970s crowds of over 15,000 were recorded there. None of that is available to the club now — safety concerns have pushed Central Norte out of its own ground, and home matches are currently played at the Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena instead. Within Salta itself, Central Norte has taken the provincial Torneo Anual title 37 times. The club sits in the Primera Nacional, working out how to hold its place after the jump up.
