The club took its name and its colours from a municipal sports ground in Colonia del Sacramento, the Plaza de Deportes. The nickname that stuck, Patas Blancas , has outlasted several generations who never saw the original pitch.

For most of that span Plaza Colonia belonged to the provincial end of Uruguayan football. That changed in 2016, when it won the Torneo Clausura — the second half of the Uruguayan season — and earned the right to play off for the national title. Peñarol won the final. In 2021 the sequence repeated almost exactly: the Apertura went to Plaza Colonia, the Campeonato Uruguayo final went to Peñarol. Two more finals followed, the Supercopa Uruguaya in 2022 and the Copa AUF Uruguay in 2025, and Peñarol won both.

The 2016 side leaned on Germán Rivero, an Argentine forward who became the club's leading scorer of the modern period, and on Facundo Waller, a midfielder the club had raised itself.

Loans, though, have their own place here. Mauricio Victorino, who went to the 2010 World Cup, started at the club in 2004.
