Armindo Santos Graça, Alípio de Oliveira and the others who signed that founding document could not have known the name itself would not survive the year: by March 1916 it had become Varzim Sport Club.
The club spent its early decades working through regional football before reaching anything resembling a national stage. From there Varzim built the record that still defines it: four Segunda Divisão titles, spaced out across 1962–63, 1975–76, 1995–96 and 2011–12. The club never quite broke through in the Taça de Portugal, reaching the semi-final three times, in 1978, 1980 and 1985.
