Athlone Town Women go into this season chasing a third straight League of Ireland Women's Premier Division title, having taken the 2024 and 2025 crowns. Europe has arrived quickly too: in the 2025/26 UEFA Women's Champions League qualifiers a 2-0 win over Red Star Belgrade in the third-place play-off sent them into the Women's Europa Conference League, and in the 2026/27 Champions League qualifying round they beat ŽFK Skopje 2014 4-0 before falling 3-1 to Czarni Sosnowiec.

None of that was there five years ago. The club only took the field for the first time in August 2020, set up as the women's section of Athlone Town A.F.C., whose own history runs back to 1887. It borrowed the parent club's nickname, "The Town", and its blue-and-black stripes.

Manager Tommy Hewitt gave captain Laurie Ryan, a former Clare Gaelic football player, her first trial at the club.

Home games are played at the Athlone Town Stadium in Lissywollen, a 5,000-capacity ground with 2,500 seats, where a club barely out of its infancy now measures itself against the rest of Europe.
