Fortaleza sits on Brazil's north-eastern coast, in Ceará, and for over a century its football has belonged to Fortaleza Esporte Clube. The club traces itself to Stella Foot-Ball Club, founded in 1915, refounded as Fortaleza Sporting Club on 18 October 1918; the English name held until 1946, when a law banning foreign words in club titles forced the change to its present one.
Home games are played at Estádio Governador Plácido Aderaldo Castelo, better known as Castelão, which holds 63,903. The two meet in the Clássico-Rei. Fortaleza plays in red, white and blue, and carries the nickname Leão do Pici.
Domestically the club has been the dominant force in Ceará state football, with 46 titles in the Campeonato Cearense, five of them won in a row between 2019 and 2023. The club reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana.
