Class Action Filed Against Mark Walter's Insurance Firms

Policyholders accuse former Lakers co-owner Mark Walter of fraud and hiding how their premiums funded his sports investments before regulatory scrutiny went public.

The claim centres on Walter's investment strategy. According to the suit, he channelled money raised through his insurance companies into his own management firms, which used the funds to buy up sports assets. Neither regulators nor the policyholders themselves were told how the money was being invested or how closely those investments were tied to Walter's own business structures.

The insurers had marketed themselves on financial stability and security, while in practice depending heavily on Walter's own capital and business holdings. The class action also alleges that his companies kept clients in the dark about the regulatory scrutiny and investigations swirling around the businessman, even as they went on signing up new customers throughout the past year. The window during which clients could freely walk away from those policies has already closed.

Walter has already sold his stakes in the Lakers and in Chelsea as the investigation has unfolded. That inquiry began more than a year ago but only became public knowledge this summer.

If the allegations hold up, the case could force a wider look at how Walter's insurance and sports holdings were financed, and at what else policyholders were not told before the free-cancellation period ran out.
