Leopoldo Luque arrived at Gimnasia y Tiro in 1979. He shared a dressing room with goalkeeper Juan José López, and in November that year the club hosted River Plate, with Ramón Díaz on the visiting side, in a friendly.

Two runs stand apart. In 1992-93 and again in 1996-97, Gimnasia y Tiro won the Octagonal play-off in the old Primera B Nacional, beating Central Córdoba the first time and Talleres the second, and went up to Primera División on both occasions. Between 2009 and 2011 the team went 49 matches at home without losing, a run shared as the national record across AFA and Copa Argentina competition, and the 2010-11 promotion through Torneo Argentino B came with 50 points, a points record for that division at the time.
