The franchise itself was a late addition to the Caribbean Premier League, brought in as an expansion side in January 2015 to fill the gap left by the Antigua Hawksbills. Ownership has moved more than the team has: control passed from the founding group to Hong Kong's City Sports Group, and later to Mahesh Ramani's Winning Willows Limited, while the name and the base in St Kitts and Nevis never changed.

Red, green and yellow on the kit are lifted straight from the national flag, and the Patriots wore them to their first CPL title in 2021, beating the Saint Lucia Kings by three wickets in the final on the back of Dominic Drakes' 48. It was followed a year later by the inaugural SKYEX 6ixty title, taken from the Trinbago Knight Riders in another three-wicket finish. Chris Gayle came in as marquee player and Dwayne Bravo captained the side.

There is no single named derby attached to the club, but matches against the Barbados Tridents and the Saint Lucia Kings carry the sharpest edge.
