About the player
Aleksandr Kovalenko started out at Chertanovo before making his senior debut in the Second Division in the 2021/22 season. Krylya Sovetov signed him in February 2022, and by March that year he was already playing in the Russian Premier League.
A move to Sochi in July 2022 was followed immediately by a loan back to Krylya Sovetov, where he made 21 appearances and scored once during the 2022/23 season. That run of games persuaded Zenit Saint Petersburg to sign him in June 2023, and he was part of the Zenit squad that swept the Russian Premier League, the Russian Cup and the Russian Super Cup that season.
He left Zenit for Orenburg in August 2024 on a three-year contract and played through the 2024/25 season there before returning to Sochi in July 2025 on a four-year deal. In June 2026 he moved again, joining Lokomotiv Moscow on a season-long loan from Sochi that includes a non-mandatory option to buy.
He made his senior debut for the national team in September 2022 in a friendly against Kyrgyzstan, which Russia won 2-1. Although eligible to play for Armenia through his mother, he chose to represent Russia.
