Alfons Sampsted

Alfons Sampsted broke through in Norway rather than at home. He joined Bodø/Glimt in February 2020 on an undisclosed fee from IFK Norrköping and quickly became a regular starter, playing 29 league games in his first season as the club won its first-ever Eliteserien title. He kept his place the following year as Bodø/Glimt retained the championship, and by the time he left he had made more than 80 appearances for the club.

Before that breakthrough, his path had run through a string of loan spells: Þór Akureyri, IF Sylvia on two occasions, Landskrona BoIS, and a temporary return to his first club, Breiðablik. That led to a settled run in Sweden with Norrköping before the move to Norway.

A free transfer took him to FC Twente at the end of December 2022. He later joined Birmingham City on loan with an option to buy, and in his first season in England the club won promotion out of League One, with Sampsted making 15 appearances and scoring once in that campaign. He also picked up an ankle injury while away on international duty with Iceland in late 2024, which kept him out for several weeks. Birmingham exercised the option to sign him permanently in the summer of 2025.

He stayed in Birmingham into the following season before signing for Go Ahead Eagles in January 2026, agreeing a contract through the summer of 2028. On the international stage, Sampsted made his senior debut for Iceland in a friendly against Canada. He also holds the appearance record for Iceland's under-21 side.
