About the player
On the final day of the 2023–24 League One season, Conor Shaughnessy scored the winning goal against Barnsley. That goal secured the league title and promotion to the Championship for Portsmouth. He was later named in both the PFA Team of the Year and the EFL League One Team of the Season.
The centre-back came to Portsmouth in 2023 on a free transfer from Burton Albion. He has made more than 77 appearances for the club and scored eight goals. His senior career now runs past 200 appearances.
The route there was long. Shaughnessy, from Galway, started at Mervue United and moved to Reading's academy in 2012. Leeds United took him in 2016, and he made his senior debut for them on 6 August 2017 against Bolton Wanderers. Fifteen appearances for Leeds followed before he left in February 2021.
Much of his development came on loan. At Heart of Midlothian in 2019 he reached the Scottish Cup final. Spells at Mansfield Town and Burton Albion gave him regular football. After leaving Leeds he had a short stay at Rochdale, then returned to Burton, where he played 57 games and scored four goals before moving to Portsmouth.
Shaughnessy has represented the Republic of Ireland at every youth level from under-15 to under-21. He has not yet won a senior cap.
