About the player
Dávid Banai has been part of two Újpest squads that beat Ferencváros in a Magyar Kupa final: on penalties in 2017–18, then 1-0 in extra time in 2020–21. He has spent his whole career inside the club's structure and never going out on loan.
He was moved up to the first-team squad in 2011/2012, but his top-flight debut did not come until 30 May 2015. He has since made more than 150 league appearances, and his contract runs to 30 June 2027. Before that he had worked through Hungary's age groups from U16 to U21, earning 19 youth caps between 2010 and 2016. He has not yet played for the senior national side.
Some of his most talked-about games ended in defeat. In March 2024 he saved a penalty in extra time in a Magyar Kupa tie against Paks, but Újpest went out. He called the loss crushing. In May 2025 he came on for the injured Riccardo Piscitelli against ETO Győr and made several important saves, one of them from a penalty, though Újpest lost 3-2. In August 2023 one of his stops was named the Nemzeti Bajnokság I Save of the Month.
In October 2020 a COVID-19 outbreak forced Újpest to field a youth-heavy side. Banai spoke up publicly to rally his teammates.
