About the player
Hussein Ali's international career began with a choice. He switched allegiance to Iraq in 2023. He made his senior debut on 7 September 2023 in a King's Cup semi-final against India, which Iraq won on penalties. Ali started the final against Lebanon and played the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 win, so he was part of the squad that won the 2023 King's Cup.
He went on to play at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. His one goal for Iraq so far came in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Vietnam on 11 June 2024. It was a long-range strike in the 12th minute. He has about 29 caps and is a regular starter in Iraq's qualifying campaigns.
Ali was born in Malmö and grew up in Malmö FF's youth system, which he left in 2019 without a first-team appearance. He moved to Örebro SK that August and made his professional debut in September. He played 58 league games there across three seasons, in the Allsvenskan from 2019 to 2021 and in the Superettan in 2022.
In July 2022 he signed a three-year contract with SC Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie. He played 26 league matches for the club before leaving in 2025.
In September 2025 he joined Pogoń Szczecin as a free agent on a three-year deal, with an option to extend, running to 30 June 2028. He scored twice in his first 22 league appearances for the club.
