About the player
Ion Gheorghe wears the captain's armband at FC Voluntari, a role he returned to in July 2025 after a season away with Gloria Buzău. Born in Călărași, he came up through the youth ranks at Team București before moving into Dinamo București's academy and, later, the senior side, where he made four appearances. His breakthrough came at Voluntari after an August 2018 move: across four seasons there he made 144 appearances and scored 14 goals.
He left as a free agent in 2022 for Sepsi OSK Sfântu Gheorghe. In two seasons there, spread across 51 appearances, he won the Cupa României in 2022–23 and the Supercupa României in both 2022 and 2023. A loan to Stal Mielec in Poland followed in early 2024, before a season at Gloria Buzău preceded his return to Voluntari.
Gheorghe has also represented Romania at underage and Olympic level, with caps at both Under-18 and Under-19, and three appearances for the Olympic team in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Listed as equally comfortable on either foot, he now plays his football back where his senior career first took shape.
