FC Voluntari

The 2016/17 Cupa României final went to penalties after Voluntari and Astra Giurgiu could not be separated at 1-1, and the club walked away with the trophy.

The club carries the name of the town it represents in Ilfov county, and it started from nothing in 2010. There was no old team to inherit shirts or history from — Voluntari took over a vacated league spot from Petrolul Berca and built forward. The town's municipality has run the club since, which is not how most Romanian sides are owned.

Promotion followed promotion at speed. Bogdan Andone took the team up through Liga III in 2014 and Liga II the following year, two jumps in two seasons that put Voluntari into the top flight for the first time. By the time the cup run came around in 2017, Claudiu Niculescu was in charge, and he added the Supercupa României days after the final, beating Viitorul Constanța 1-0 on a goal from Costin Lazăr.

Since then the closest the club has come was a losing cup final in 2021/22, beaten 2-1 by Sepsi OSK. Mihai Roman wore the captain's armband through much of that era, and Florin Tănase passed through on his way to becoming a Romania international. Home games are played at the Stadionul Anghel Iordănescu, named after the former national team manager, which holds 4,600.

Voluntari reached the top division within five years of being founded.
