Isak Pettersson

Isak Pettersson did not start out in goal. He played as a midfielder and left-back at Genevad/Veinge IF, and only switched to goalkeeper at 16. Within a year he was in the youth academy at Halmstads BK, working through the U17, U18 and U19 sides before making his senior debut in 2016.

That spring he was loaned to Östers IF and played 11 games in Division 1 Södra. When Halmstads were relegated, he moved to IFK Norrköping on a free transfer in early 2018. It was there that his name became known nationally: the Allsvenskan named him Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018 and again in 2019.

Pettersson made his Sweden debut on 11 January 2019, coming on at half-time for Oscar Linnér in a friendly against Iceland. He has two senior caps, and was also invited to training camps in 2020. Earlier he had played four times for the Under-19s and appeared at Under-21 level.

In January 2021 he left Norrköping when his contract ran out and joined Toulouse FC on a free transfer. The spell in France was a quiet one. Toulouse won the Ligue 2 title in 2021–22, and he made a single appearance for the first team, while also playing for the reserves in the Championnat National. In January 2023 he moved to Norway and Stabæk, where he played 30 games in the Eliteserien.

He signed a three-year contract with IF Elfsborg in December 2023 and arrived in January 2024. The defining night of his time there came in August 2024, in the Europa League play-off against Molde FK. He saved Markus Kaasa's penalty in the shootout, which took Elfsborg into the group stage for the first time since 2013. He then featured in that campaign's group matches against Roma and Galatasaray.
