About the player
James Shea was the squad goalkeeper for the League Two Play-off Final against Plymouth Argyle, which Wimbledon won to reach League One. Kelle Roos started; Shea did not play.
Shea came up through the Arsenal academy and won the FA Youth Cup with the club in 2008–09. He never made a first-team appearance for Arsenal, though he was loaned to Dagenham & Redbridge in 2011 and had a trial at Colorado Rapids in 2013. When he left that year, he dropped into non-league football with Needham Market and then Harrow Borough. His season at Harrow Borough ended with the Player of the Year award.
That season led to AFC Wimbledon, who signed him on a free transfer in July 2014. He made 95 league appearances for them before moving to Luton Town, again on a free, in July 2017.
At Luton he arrived in a squad that won the League One title in 2017–18, with Marek Štěch the main goalkeeper that season. Shea started out wearing number 36 and took the number 1 shirt in 2020–21. The club later played in the Championship and then the Premier League.
His Premier League debut came in 2023–24, on the final day of the season. He replaced Thomas Kaminski in that match.
