About the player
João Nunes was part of the Portugal side that reached the final of the 2014 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, and the defender was named in the Team of the Tournament. It remains his only individual honour. In 2015 he played at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He has not been capped by the senior national side.
Benfica B was his base for three years, and he made 52 appearances there. In August 2016 he left for Poland, joining Lechia Gdańsk. He made 76 league appearances over three years, and in the 2018–19 season the club won the Polish Cup.
Nunes left Lechia as a free agent in July 2019 and signed a three-year contract with Panathinaikos. He played 11 league games for the Greek club before moving to Hungary's Puskás Akadémia in July 2020 for €100,000. There he made 45 league appearances across two seasons.
In July 2022 he returned to Portugal on a free transfer to join Casa Pia, where he made 45 league appearances until 2024. That July he moved, again on a free transfer, to Újpest, and he has since played more than 60 times for the club.
