Zvornik and Novi Sad shaped him first: Stevanović came through Drina Zvornik's youth ranks before Vojvodina picked him up, and it was at Vojvodina that his career took off, capped by a loan spell at Borac Banja Luka where he won the Bosnian Cup. That form carried him to Sevilla in a move worth around €1.2 million by most contemporary reporting, though Transfermarkt has since put the figure higher. It never quite worked out in Spain.

He then played for Győri ETO in Hungary, Ergotelis in Greece, and returned home to Željezničar Sarajevo, where he was named Bosnian Premier League Player of the Season. That form persuaded Servette to sign him on a free transfer. He helped the club up from the Challenge League, was named that division's Player of the Year, and has since added a Swiss Cup winner's medal. His standout campaign came in 2021–22, when he set a Swiss Super League record with 20 assists in a single season.

Internationally, Stevanović worked his way up through Bosnia and Herzegovina's youth sides before earning a senior cap in 2012, going on to score against Wales, Finland and Liechtenstein across a spell that ran until his retirement from the national team in 2024.
