Tiago Alexandre de Sousa Esgaio

Tiago Esgaio's career reads as a steady climb through Portugal's lower and mid-tier divisions rather than a rapid rise. Born in Nazaré, he came through the youth ranks at Nazarenos and União de Leiria before joining Rio Ave's academy, but he never broke into the club's first team. His senior career began instead at Caldas in 2014, followed by two productive spells either side of a loan at Torreense.

A move to B-SAD in 2018 gave him four seasons of regular football before Braga signed him in 2021 for a reported fee of €300,000. He was loaned straight back out to Arouca, where the loan was extended twice, taking him through the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons. He made his mark there with steady defensive performances in the league and further appearances in the Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga.

When his contract with Braga expired in July 2024, Esgaio joined Arouca permanently for €200,000, converting a loan spell into a lasting move to the Primeira Liga. He switched from the number 31 shirt he wore during his first season on loan to his current number, and has continued to feature regularly for the club in his permanent stint.

Esgaio has not earned senior caps for Portugal, a contrast with his brother Ricardo Esgaio.
