About the player
In 2022, Tomoki Iwata was named J.League MVP after Yokohama F. Marinos won the J1 League.
He came up through Oita Trinita's academy, which he joined in 2015 after starting at Yokkaichi Minami SSC. He made his senior debut in 2016, the season Oita won the J3 League, and in 2018 the club finished as runners-up in the J2 League. He moved to Yokohama F. Marinos in 2021.
In January 2022 Celtic took him on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy, reportedly for about £828,000. The deal was made permanent in July 2023. He made 18 appearances in the first of those campaigns and 24 in the second. His one goal for the club came against Heart of Midlothian in October 2023.
In August 2024 he signed for Birmingham City on a three-year contract running to June 2027, for a reported fee of around €0.98 million.
For Japan, he made his senior debut on 20 June 2019 against Uruguay at the Copa América and has won four caps. He was in the squad that won the 2022 EAFF E-1 Football Championship, but he was left out of the party for that year's World Cup. Before the senior side he played for Japan at under-18, under-19 and under-23 level.
