Anagennisi Deryneia

Reading was the point before football was. In December 1920 the village schoolteacher Eleftherios Iakovou Montanios and a group of residents in Deryneia set up "Anagnostirio Omonoia" — a reading society meant to fight illiteracy in the Famagusta district. Football and volleyball sections grew out of it later, side branches of what began as an education drive. In 1955, with the EOKA campaign against British rule under way, the colonial authorities banned the name "Omonoia." The society kept going under a new one, "Anagennisi" — rebirth — and dated its history back to 1920 all the same.

The football side took until 1972 to join the Cyprus Football Association, and it has stayed a modest one: two Cypriot Second Division titles, in 1998–99 and 2002–03, with no First Division or Cup title to set beside them. Volleyball did better early on, taking the Cypriot Men's Cup in both 1976 and 1977, beating Olympiakos Nicosia in both finals. When the football team did reach the top flight, in 2011–12 and again in 2016–17, it could not play at home: the Anagennisi Football Ground, built in 1974, did not meet First Division requirements, and Deryneia's matches were switched to the Tasos Markou Stadium in Lythrodontas, a considerable way from the club's own ground.

André Schembri, the Maltese international, took charge of the side in 2024; Savvas Poursaitidis, who holds both Greek and Cypriot caps, started out as a manager there in 2016. Deryneia's fixture with neighbouring Sotira's Onisillos is known locally as the "γειτονικό ντέρμπι" — the neighbourly derby — a title that owes more to geography than to any long rivalry in the record books. The club's academy has kept up its own end of things, most recently running training camps as far afield as Sofiko, near Corinth.
