In the 2015–16 season Athletic Club Women beat Real Sociedad in the Basque derby on their way to a league title. That title, the fifth in the club's history, came after three straight championships in the competition's opening years had given way to a long wait.

The team, known as Las Leonas, plays in red and white stripes with black shorts, and its record in the Primera División Femenina belongs mostly to that early spell: champions in 2002–03, 2003–04 and 2004–05, then again in 2006–07 before the gap that ended in 2016. The Copa de la Reina has been less kind — runners-up finishes in 2012, against Espanyol, and in 2014, against Barcelona, with the cup itself still missing from the cabinet.

Several players who came through the Bilbao side went on to wear Spain's colours, among them Irene Paredes and Lucía García, a forward.
