Bolívar

Bolívar enter the current Bolivian top flight as the team every rival still measures itself against, a club that has claimed the Primera División at least 26 times in the professional era, more than 30 counting the amateur years before that.

The club grew out of a student society, founded on 12 April 1925 by a group led by José Luis Gutiérrez as Club Atlético Bolívar Literario Musical, a name that carried football, literature and music under one roof before it shortened to simply Club Bolívar. The light-blue shirt gave the team its lasting nickname, Los Celestes.

Marco Etcheverry, known as El Diablo, drove the side through the 1990s and still on the pitch when Bolívar reached the 2004 Copa Sudamericana final, the closest the club has come to a continental trophy before losing out to Boca Juniors.
