Cerro Porteño

Thirty-five Paraguayan league titles carry the name Cerro Porteño, a list that opens in 1913 and reached its latest entry in 2025 with a Clausura crown, the modern honours arriving as Apertura and Clausura titles once the league split its season in two. The club shares Paraguay's biggest stage with only one rival, Olimpia, and the meetings between them go by a single name, the Superclásico, regarded across South America as one of its sharpest derbies. Against Guaraní or Libertad there is plenty of needle, but nothing carries the same weight.

Continental football has offered near-misses rather than silverware. Cerro Porteño reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores six times, in 1973, 1978, 1993, 1998, 1999 and 2011, without ever making the final, and went out at the same stage of the Copa Sudamericana in 2009 and 2016.

The club took shape in Barrio Obrero in 1912, and the nickname that followed it, El Ciclón, still carries the neighbourhood's name in full: El Ciclón de Barrio Obrero. Red and blue went onto the shirt as the colours of a political party of the day; white was added to the shorts for the flag of Paraguay, and the same red-and-blue stripe also earned the club a second nickname, Azulgrana. Supporters know it too as El Más Popular.

Home games are played at the Estadio General Pablo Rojas, known to Asunción simply as La Nueva Olla, rebuilt between 2015 and 2017 to hold 45,000 people in the same Barrio Obrero streets where the club began.
